At Grootbos, we celebrate the vibrant wines of South Africa’s Overberg region with a down-to-earth passion. Our expansive cellar boasts world class cool climate wines, rare Cape Winemakers Guild vintages, and our own house wine, all sourced within a 50km radius, wherever possible, to support local producers.
Whether you’re savoring a tailored food and wine pairing, exploring our collection with our expert sommeliers, or touring nearby wine farms, our team is dedicated to sharing the stories and flavors that make this region the coolest place for wine lovers.
Discover the pinnacle of South African winemaking with Grootbos’ exclusive connection to the Cape Winemakers Guild (CWG), an prestigious association founded in 1982 to advance wine quality through innovation. Our lodge boasts one of the world’s largest collections of CWG wines, perfectly cellared for optimal enjoyment. Savour iconic auction stars like the Kanonkop CWG Paul Sauer; the Le Riche CWG Cabernet Sauvignon and the Newton Johnson CWG Windansea Pinot Noir as well as many more. These rare, limited-edition wines, enjoyed at their peak, elevate our bespoke tastings and wine tours to an unparalleled experience.
At Grootbos, we offer two distinct dining experiences celebrating the Overberg’s vibrant flavors. Our three-course à la carte menu, with expertly paired wines, caters to all palates - vegans, vegetarians, and meat lovers - featuring dishes like charred cauliflower with tahini or Cape Malay bobotie, matched with regional gems like crisp Sauvignon Blancs and world class Pinot Noirs.
The Botanical Menu, ever-evolving and tailored to guests’ needs, showcases local, foraged ingredients such as dune spinach and fynbos honey in innovative creations like wild rosemary with springbok, paired with the cellar’s finest, perfectly matured wines, to reflect the season’s best.
Discover the Cape Winelands with Grootbos’ bespoke wine tours, guided by expert sommeliers through Hemel-en-Aarde and Cape Agulhas. Tailored to your preferences, our tours visit two to three boutique wine farms, offering tastings of 12 to 16 premium wines, including vibrant Sauvignon Blancs, elegant Pinot Noirs, and delicate, spicy cool-climate Syrahs with white pepper and violet aromas. Enjoy a bespoke picnic lunch or tasting platter, or opt for intimate, curated tastings at the lodge from our finest cellar selections.
Grootbos is a world leader in sustainable tourism and has been awarded some of the highest international accolades possible, making us one of only a handful of lodges to achieve this.
The last year has been a busy one at Grootbos. We rebuilt our beloved Garden Lodge entirely and re-opened it in April 2022. We also officially launched the Grootbos Florilegium - Africa's first contemporary florilegium - which is a collection of botanical illustrations created by local and international artists, depicting the charismatic plants found on our reserve and the surrounding regions.
